FIFA President Gianni Infantino attempted to relocate the 80-year-old before eventually escorting him away to allow the team to celebrate.
Spain’s World Cup Victory at MetLife Stadium
Spain secured their second-ever World Cup title, defeating a 10-man Argentina side 1-0. The match remained a defensive struggle through the first 45 minutes, with Argentina failing to register a single shot throughout the entire contest, including extra time. The match was defined by a hard-fought opening 45 minutes, followed by a second half where Spain maintained the upper hand while Argentina struggled to gain any traction.
The decisive moment arrived early in the second period of extra time when Ferran Torres, who entered the match as a substitute, scored the winning goal. The opportunity was created when Nico Williams headed the ball down to Torres, who then struck a finish past Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martínez. This occurred shortly after a Nico Williams goal was disallowed for a soft foul. Argentina’s path to the trophy became significantly more difficult after Enzo Fernández was shown a red card for a second bookable offense following a foul on Pau Cubarsi late in regulation time.
Spain had to dig deep to withstand late Argentine pressure. Deep into the dying moments of extra time, a threatening cross from Lionel Messi was nearly converted by Giuliano Simeone, only for Mikel Merino to produce a heroic block. From the resulting corner, Simeone fired an attempt well over the bar, and when referee Slavko Vincic sounded the final whistle, Spain were crowned world champions.

Trophy Ceremony Disruptions and FIFA Interaction
Trump appeared to brush off appeals from FIFA President Gianni Infantino to remain on the podium alongside Spain. Trump participated in the medal distribution before refusing to vacate the stage, seeking the limelight rather than allowing captain Rodri and his teammates their moment.

As cannons of gold confetti shot into the air, Infantino was forced to rush across the platform to reach Trump, who refused to move from the edge of the stage. Infantino eventually ushered the President further from the team, putting the FIFA head and the president directly in the path of the flittering confetti. Trump was subsequently escorted away to allow the Spanish players to celebrate on their own.
This incident mirrored a scene at MetLife 12 months earlier, when Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain to claim the Club World Cup. On that occasion, Infantino attempted to usher Trump offstage, but the President remained, stiffly positioned among athletes and officials until Infantino returned to relocate him.
Security and Crowd Atmosphere
The final was played under heightened security protocols due to the President’s attendance, which saw supporters finally gain entry to the stadium as a result of the measures. Once inside, the crowd made their feelings toward the 80-year-old abundantly clear, jeering during the national anthems and continuing to boo as Trump strode onto the pitch alongside Infantino ahead of the trophy ceremony.
