However, a fateful encounter with a club owner would ultimately lead to their most recognizable name.
Legend has it that the band intended to have “Electric Cattle Gods” emblazoned on the marquee of the Ritz Concert Hall in Roseville, Michigan. Unfortunately,the club owner,Joe Sgrol,informed them the name was too long to fit. The band cleverly responded, “Do you have enough letters for ‘sponge’?” – and a musical identity was born.
