STCC’s Health science Program Recognized as a National Leader in Workforce Development
Springfield, MA – Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) has earned national recognition as a 2026 Bellwether Award finalist for its groundbreaking health science degree program. the Bellwether College Consortium, a leading voice in identifying innovative practices in community colleges, announced STCC as one of just 30 finalists selected from institutions across the United states.
This prestigious acknowledgement places STCC among an elite group of ten community colleges nationwide – and the only one in Massachusetts – advancing in the highly competitive Instructional Programs and Services category. The Bellwether Awards celebrate colleges demonstrating bold, results-driven innovation with measurable impact and replicable models.
A Scalable Solution too a Critical Workforce Need
STCC’s submission, titled “Putting the Health in Health Science: A National Meta-Major Model for Health Care Education,” highlights a program designed to address the escalating demand for skilled healthcare professionals. Launched in 2018, the program distinguishes itself through open access, integrating high-fidelity patient simulation, and embedding industry-recognized credentials directly within the curriculum.
“this recognition validates our commitment to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare education that directly responds to the needs of employers,” stated STCC President John Cook. “The health science degree isn’t just a program; it’s a national model, especially as we anticipate the expanded opportunities offered by federal Workforce Pell grants.”
Innovative Curriculum & Measurable Outcomes
The STCC health science degree program breaks down traditional barriers to entry in healthcare education. Unlike many selective programs, it operates on an open-admission basis, welcoming a diverse student body. Central to the program’s success is the SIMS Medical Center, an innovative simulation facility accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. This state-of-the-art resource provides students with hands-on experience in realistic clinical scenarios, preparing them for the demands of real-world healthcare settings.
Furthermore, the curriculum incorporates embedded credit-bearing certifications in high-demand areas such as phlebotomy, Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). This strategic integration allows students to gain valuable credentials while pursuing their associate degree, enhancing their employability and career advancement opportunities.
The program’s impact is undeniable. Enrollment has surged from an initial 36 students to over 1,000 - making it STCC’s largest program. Crucially, the program demonstrates a commitment to equity, with systematic improvements in access and achievement for part-time and underrepresented students.
Driving Diversity and Inclusion in healthcare
STCC’s health science program is also fostering a more diverse and inclusive healthcare workforce. Since its inception, the program has contributed to a significant 17% increase in Black, Indigenous, and students of colour (BIPOC) enrollment in STCC’s competitive healthcare programs, now representing 48% of the School of Health and Patient Simulation‘s total student population.
“Healthcare is a cornerstone of STCC’s mission, and this program is delivering tangible results,” explained Christopher Scott, Dean of the School of Health and Patient Simulation. ”Hundreds of graduates have gone on to further their education, transfer to four-year institutions, or secure fulfilling careers with industry-recognized credentials like Patient Care Technician and Sterile Processing Technician.”
Sharing Best Practices Nationally
as a Bellwether finalist, STCC will present its innovative model at the 32nd annual Community College Futures Assembly in San Antonio this February. This event serves as a national platform for community college leaders to share best practices and explore emerging trends in higher education.
“We are deeply grateful to our dedicated faculty and administrators for their vision and hard work in building this extraordinary program,” added President Cook. “With the potential of Workforce Pell on the horizon, STCC’s health science degree is poised to serve as a blueprint for community colleges nationwide.”
