A Different Kind of Festive Season: My Unforgettable Christmas on tour in South Africa
for a professional cricketer, the holiday season presents a unique set of circumstances. While many are gathered with family, we’re often preparing for a contest, thousands of miles from home. My most memorable Christmas unfolded in Durban, South Africa, in 2015, during the Boxing Day Test – a match brimming with anticipation.
south Africa boasted a formidable lineup, and we, fresh off an Ashes victory, were eager to prove ourselves. Personally,it was a particularly sweet moment. After months sidelined with a stress fracture, simply being fit enough to join the squad felt like the ultimate gift.
This tour differed significantly from the Australian campaign five years prior. Then, my place in the team felt uncertain. Under Trevor Bayliss‘s coaching, however, a sense of trust permeated the squad. He fostered an habitat where I felt empowered to be myself, and crucially, believed in my abilities.
Receiving the nod from captain Alastair Cook on Christmas Day was a quiet affirmation. It wasn’t a moment of overwhelming emotion, but a calm satisfaction. The day didn’t feel like Christmas, truthfully. The Durban heat and the looming challenge of facing South Africa’s batting lineup – Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, and the rest – occupied my mind.
Even the prospect of facing Dale Steyn as a nightwatchman couldn’t entirely dampen my spirits. It’s a daunting task for anyone, let alone on Christmas Day.I spent Christmas lunch with fellow players without family nearby, enjoying a shared camaraderie before retreating for some quiet planning.A spicy-looking pitch and the hope of bowling frist were the real presents I craved.
We ultimately lost the toss, but whent on to win the Test by a convincing 241 runs. The highlight? Undoubtedly, dismissing Faf du Plessis with a sharp lifter on the fourth evening, halting his resilient rearguard effort. It felt like a personal redemption, a positive counterpoint to past Christmas disappointments.
Christmas on tour transforms into just another week of intense preparation. It’s a period where you deeply empathize with teammates juggling the demands of international cricket with family commitments. Being a father, husband, and international athlete – and Santa Claus – simultaneously must be incredibly challenging.
Having family present can offer a welcome balance during long tours. However, explaining the lack of snow or Santa’s awareness of your absence to a four-year-old is a conversation I gladly left to those with children.
As I reflect this festive season, preparing to indulge in the holiday feast, my thoughts are with all the cricketers currently preparing for a match. The nerves, the excitement, and the unavoidable disappointments are all part of the life we’ve chosen. It just happens to be Christmas Day, too.
