The class was looking forward to the trip to the adventure pool.

But one of the students riding the slide hit something sharp and cut open a large part of his left arm.

– It’s hair-raising. A business like this must be safer. How can it be like this? says high school teacher Per-Mikael Ekman.

On Friday, February 16, high school teacher Per-Mikael Ekman was with his students at Västerås adventure park Kokpunkten.

The approximately 50 students were looking forward to riding in the various attractions at “Sweden’s first action pool”, as stated on the pool’s own website.

But the expectant mood was broken when one of the students went down one of the water slides.

– Suddenly, other students hear a loud bang. Then the student has come across and cut themselves on something sharp, metal or glass or something, and it hurts a lot, says Per-Mikael Ekman.

The student then got out of the pool and sat on a nearby bench. He was bleeding profusely and feeling unwell.

– It will be a 15 to 20 cm long wound which is quite deep, says Per-Mikael Ekman.

– There was also a smaller cut down here, he says and points to his wrist. It’s awfully close, he continues.

Held his eyes

Two other bathers, two adults, saw the student and helped him. While one of them covered the student’s eyes, so that he could not see his injury, the other looked at the injury.

Per-Mikael Ekman hurried forward with his colleagues. He says staff also got there, but didn’t really do anything.

“Thankfully, it was another bather who turned out to be a nurse who took care of him,” he says.

The staff shut down the slide. But Per-Mikael Ekman feels that they were far too passive.

– I myself had to stand and shoo away everyone who wanted to come forward and see what happened. From what I know and see, the staff doesn’t do much, he says.

“It’s not the first time”

Shortly after, someone called 112 and the student was taken to hospital by ambulance. There the wound was stitched up.

– Today, despite the circumstances, he seems to be doing well. But he is also shaken. We all are, says Per-Mikael Ekman.

Now he directs strong criticism against the adventure pool. He says they only inspect the water park once a year.

– It’s simply too damn good. Of course, you should inspect once a month and bring in professional, outsiders who can make proper assessments.

The accident has been reported to the police and the Swedish Work Environment Agency.

– I hope that in the future there will be more inspections and it is always good if there are healthcare personnel there. It’s not the first time something like this has happened, and there are adventure pools of a similar nature, says Per-Mikael Ekman.

In 2015, a person suffered a serious injury in connection with a visit to the bath. The following year, another person was injured, also after riding the water slide.
