Subway Extends WSL Partnership as Women’s League Cup Rebrands to Players Cup

Subway has committed to a multi-year extension of its partnership with WSL Football, locking in a commercial alliance that will see a major structural overhaul and a fresh identity for the English women’s domestic game from the 2026-27 season. Under the renewed agreement, the competition formerly known as the Subway Women’s League Cup will be officially rebranded as the Subway Players Cup, according to an official announcement from league organizers.

The partnership renewal arrives alongside sweeping format changes designed to ease fixture congestion and safeguard player well-being. WSL Football has restructured the tournament to introduce a Swiss-style league format during the group stage, utilizing regionalized fixtures that guarantee every participating club a minimum of six matches. The revised competition specifically targets increased playing time for young athletes and fringe squad members who often struggle for competitive minutes.

To further protect player welfare within an increasingly demanding international and domestic calendar, the three clubs competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League will no longer participate in the revamped tournament. The structural changes reflect a deliberate shift to center the competition around athlete development and sustainable squad management across the professional tiers in England.

Structural Overhaul and Player-Centric Focus

The rebranding of the Subway Players Cup underscores a strategic pivot toward sustainable domestic competition structures. By removing clubs competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League from the fixture list, league officials intend to level the playing field and foster greater competitive parity among participating clubs outside of continental commitments.

Zarah Al-Kudcy, Chief Revenue Officer at WSL Football, emphasized the collaborative approach behind the tournament’s redesign. “Subway have already proved themselves a valued partner of the League Cup, and we have no doubt they will bring that same energy, creativity and commitment to The Players Cup,” Al-Kudcy stated. “We wanted to create something that provided a platform to provide meaningful playing minutes for young and fringe players and to address disparity in playing opportunities across the leagues without compromising our player welfare principles in an increasingly busy women’s calendar.”

Al-Kudcy added that organizers consulted widely across the sport to ensure the new format directly responds to the physical demands placed on modern players. “We’ve spoken to a lot of people in the game about the direction we want to take, and we are confident that we have found a positive solution and that The Players Cup can become an exciting new domestic competition in England,” she said.

Commercial Growth in Women’s Football

The multi-year extension highlights the escalating commercial value of women’s football, as major brands look to align with properties that prioritize innovation, sustainable growth and enhanced player development. Subway’s continued investment positions the sandwich chain as a partner in the domestic pyramid as the sport experiences rapid expansion.

Kirstey Elston, Senior Marketing Director, Marketing, EMEA at Subway, pointed to the rapid growth of the women’s game as a key driver for the renewal. “We’re excited to renew our partnership with WSL Football as they continue to bring something fresh to the women’s game,” Elston noted. “The Players Cup represents a brilliant opportunity to support a sport that’s growing fast and inspiring communities across the country, and we’re proud to stand alongside WSL Football in championing the women’s game.”

With the new Swiss-style group stage format set to take effect for the 2026-27 campaign, stakeholders across English football will monitor how the adjustments impact squad depth, player rotation, and competitive intensity. WSL Football is expected to release further operational details regarding regional groupings and qualification criteria ahead of the tournament’s official launch.
