BRATISLAVA – Even as an opposition politician in February 2022, in a video with Erik Kaliňák, Robert Fico criticized the then government of Eduard Heger for not doing anything about expensive gasoline. At that time, a liter of classic gasoline cost 1.53 euros. Today it is around 1.70 euros, and on this occasion Richard Sulík (SaS) recorded a video similar to that of Robert Fico two years ago, while he also gave the government a proposal on how to deal with high prices.

Slovak motorists are currently refueling with the most expensive gasoline of all the surrounding countries, while its price continues to rise. The opposition party SaS is therefore asking Prime Minister Robert Fico to start solving the price of gasoline immediately and not to bury his head in the sand. Last Wednesday, SaS submitted two specific bills to the National Council, which, according to them, will allow the price of gasoline to drop by 20 cents per liter.

According to Richard Sulík, there is no indication that gasoline prices in Slovakia will start to fall. “On the contrary, prices will also rise in connection with the summer months and the escalation of tensions in the Middle East. Ultimately, it will once again affect the poorest. We have a chance to have the lowest gasoline prices in V4. But Robert Fico’s government would also have to solve the real problems of people who feel the increase in gasoline prices every time they fill up.” said Richard Sulík. On this occasion, he recorded a video in which he combined his footage and Fico’s statements from 2022.

According to the Minister of Finance, Slovnaft is responsible for the price increase

“It’s not the state that extorts people, but it’s the prices of producers,” he referred to gasoline prices on a talk show Radio Express Minister of Finance Ladislav Kamenický. “I am telling Mr. Sulík that if he wants to lower the price, he should contact his friends at Slovnaft.” The moderator reminded him that Slovnaft is in the hands of the Hungarian semi-state concern MOL. “When I fix the mess in public finances that was left after all of them, then we can reduce consumption taxes,” concluded Kamenicky.
