A mysterious audio recording was released on Wednesday Egri Affairs to a local news portal, on which the mayor of Eger, Ádám Mirkóczki, is said to be talking about how he can undermine public interest data requests (according to the paper, the recording was City Hall Talponálló Facebook page made public). The recording is mysterious because for a long time it could not be confirmed whether Mirkóczki, who was elected city manager in 2019 with the support of the opposition, is actually speaking on it.

Mirkóczki finally a 444confirmed that his voice can be heard on the recording, which deals with the actions of Dániel Domán, the local politician considered by the Hungarian Kétfarkú Kutya Party as their candidate for mayor and representative.

In the cut footage – which is here can be heard – Mirkóczki also says things like: “I wouldn’t give anything out, I’m in such a way that he sues for everything, I’ll take out all the relevant parts or bone them out so that here’s nothing you can’t do anything with.” Or: “…if they ask for a specific contract, I will delete the parts that are of interest to him. Well, we released it, just in our opinion, according to our legal point of view, it is a, business secret, b, personal data, c, what I know.”

Domán has been trying to find out how much the monument cost since last July Lenkey House renovation – the official price was HUF 475.2 million. He turned to the competent bodies with a public interest data request, after not receiving a response, he initiated a lawsuit against the István Dobó Castle Museum for the disclosure of the contracts. While the first-instance verdict favored Domán, the Castle Museum appealed, and Eger Deputy Mayor Gábor Minczér made public a contract. At that time, Domán claimed that, according to him, the city administration could have embellished the document.

This is a personal matter for the mayor

Mirkóczki said about the whole thing that he was satisfied with the activities of Domán, who, in his opinion, was abusing data requests in the public interest. That’s why he called a meeting, where the clerk, the deputy clerk, the head of the legal office and the deputy mayors took part. This is where the 46-second segment, cut according to the mayor, was heard. Mirkóczki put it this way to 444:

“It was generally about one person in a particular case. About how we should proceed if, in the future, especially in the period up to June 9, this loose ship’s cannon causes further such nonsense to happen to the office.”

According to Mirkóczki, he did not oppress the Castle Museum, it was not because of him that they appealed against the first instance verdict. He openly stated to the newspaper that, if it were up to him, he would not release the contract until the final judgment. “This is a matter of principle and against one person,” he added. He said that the budget and all relevant data have already been made public. He will take the necessary legal steps in the matter of the leaked recording.
