Upstate University Hospital is taking a significant step forward in bolstering emergency care for Central New York and beyond. Much of the initial design focus will center on creating a larger, more efficient emergency department.Simultaneously, a modern burn unit with advanced treatment capabilities is being planned. CannonDesign, the firm leading the design process, will collaborate closely with Upstate’s clinical teams.This collaboration will ensure the integration of crucial elements like optimized patient flow,specialized trauma spaces,and technology-ready infrastructure.
Addressing Regional Growth & Future Needs
The hospital’s CEO, Dr. Robert Corona, emphasized the project’s importance, calling it “an exciting and essential step.” Anticipated regional growth is a key driver behind the expansion.This project ensures Upstate is prepared to deliver world-class healthcare to the community for years to come. A Commitment to Inclusive Development
Planning and design efforts will continue throughout next year. SUNY and SUNY Upstate are coordinating procurement, consultant outreach, and initial construction phases. A strong commitment to local economic impact is also a priority. SUNY is dedicated to involving local contractors and Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE) throughout the project. A briefing for MWBE firms was already held this summer, with continued outreach planned as design and construction details are finalized.
