texas Power Grid Prepared for Winter weather, ERCOT Says
Texas officials state the state’s electric grid is prepared to handle increased demand as colder temperatures move into the region. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) has issued a Weather Watch from Saturday through Tuesday as the cold front approaches, but expects grid conditions to remain normal while closely monitoring demand.
Monitoring Demand and Recent Improvements
ERCOT is closely monitoring the demand on the power grid as temperatures drop. According to Carey King, a research scientist and deputy director at the University of Texas at Austin’s Energy Institute, colder temperatures can cause demand to increase rapidly. KUT News reports that winter weather puts a strain on the electric grid, especially in light of the failures experienced during the February 2021 winter storm.
“In February 2021, we saw that you can have peak demand during the winter if you have a strong freeze,” King explained.
