Box Office Update: “Last Rites” & “Hamilton” Lead a Dynamic Weekend

“Last Rites” & The “Conjuring” Universe
initial reactions are in for the newest installment in the popular horror franchise. While critics haven’t universally embraced “Last rites,” mirroring the reception of many films in the series, audiences are responding positively. The film earned a B CinemaScore, a solid grade for a horror release, indicating viewer enjoyment.
Interestingly, the opening weekend numbers haven’t surpassed the franchise’s peak. In 2013, the original Conjuring debuted with $41 million domestically (unadjusted for inflation).The Nun (2018) held the record at $53.8 million until now, demonstrating the enduring appeal – and high bar - set by the series’ early successes.
“hamilton” Continues to Captivate
Disney’s rerelease of the filmed version of Hamilton is proving to be a major draw. The groundbreaking musical earned an estimated $3.9 million on Friday, including $850,000 from Thursday previews.
Based on these early returns, Hamilton is projected to land in second place for the weekend, with an estimated $9 million to $10 million. This performance is comparable to last weekend’s 50th-anniversary rerelease of Steven spielberg’s Jaws.
The musical is currently playing in 1,825 theaters nationwide.
Over 100 of these theaters feature premium large-format screens,enhancing the viewing experience.
Initially promoted as a one-week engagement, the run is likely to be extended due to strong demand.
Rounding Out the Top Five
Warner Bros.and Disney currently dominate the top of the box office charts. New Line’s weapons and Disney’s Freakier Friday, both in their fifth week of release, are holding strong in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
While Weapons‘ longevity isn’t surprising, Freakier Friday’s continued performance is generating discussion. Unfortunately, Darren Aronofsky‘s Caught Stealing* is facing a different trajectory. It’s expected to experience a important drop of over 60% in its second weekend, likely resulting in a fifth-place finish.
