They don’t want to pay compensation to the patient.

A 40-year-old Turkish man is lucky to be alive after a dental implant screw ended up in his brain cavity. Ramazan Yilmaz went to a private dental clinic in his hometown of Bursa, Turkey, because he was suffering from a toothache. After examining him, the dentist there told Yilmaz that his teeth were loose and his jaw was sensitive, so the best solution was to pull out his teeth and replace them with implants.

Trusting the specialist’s opinion, Yilmaz agreed to the dental intervention and removed some of the doctor’s teeth that same day. From then on, the patient’s condition worsened and his severe pain increased. During the treatment, he noticed that the dentist told his assistant that the device used to insert the implant screws into the bone was not working well, so the doctor inserted the screws manually, which Yilmaz suffered terribly.

“When he tried to insert the screw, I noticed he was pushing too hard” – said Ramazan Yilmaz – “I told him I heard a sound like a bone breaking, but he reassured me that it was completely normal”. But as the doctor continued to force the screw, it pierced through the patient’s jaw and entered the area behind the eye, where the brain and spinal fluid already reside. As the metal screw penetrated his jawbone and entered the brain cavity, Yilmaz screamed from the unbearable pain. The dentist only realized how serious the situation was after taking an X-ray of the man’s skull. The metal screw was near the brain and was feared to cause death or severe disability.

The dentist then quickly put Yilmaz in his car and personally took him to the emergency department of Uludag University Hospital, where the doctors prescribed the 40-year-old man for emergency surgery. “After the tests, it turned out that the screw had penetrated into the area where the brain and spinal fluid are located. I was warned before the operation that I might not survive, so I said goodbye to my children, but luckily the operation was successful” he told me.

Doctors were able to remove the metal screw without brain damage, and after a few days of recovery, Yilmaz was discharged home. Since then, the man has been suing the dentist, as he refuses to reimburse Yilmaz’s expenses and pay him compensation, and even refuses to acknowledge his responsibility, so the unfortunate patient went to court.
