With all its minuses in terms of infrastructure, Romania still has some roads that enter the top. At least in a tourist top: the vacation platform Travelminit.ro has made a ranking of the most beautiful roads in Romania and also lists some destinations that you can access once you get on the road – such a trip includes spectacular mountain landscapes and sights like caves and mountain lakes, but also natural monuments

Transfăgărăşan

Transfagărașan, which is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful roads in Europe and even in the world. It crosses the Făgăraș Mountains, connecting the regions of Muntenia and Transylvania, and stretches along 152 kilometers, being the longest road in Romania. While you are walking it, we propose to visit the Bâlea lake and waterfall, the Poenari fortress, and the Capra tunnel.

They moved

Transrarău has the reputation of the “Treasure Road” and crosses the mountains of the same name, along 28 kilometers, at an altitude of 1400 m, between the towns of Chiril and Pojorata. Along the way, tourists can admire fairy-tale landscapes, but also the natural monuments Pietrele Doamnei and Saua Fundu Colbului.

Transalpina

Transaplina measures 148 kilometers and is the highest road in the country, reaching a maximum height of 2145 m in Pasul Urdele. The mountain road connects the towns of Novaci and Sebes and crosses the counties of Gorj, Vâlcea, Sibiu and Alba. Those who cross the Transalpina can visit the Polovragi monastery and cave, the Muierilor cave, the otter lake and the hammocks in Baia de Fier.

Transbucegi

Transbucegi, also known as Babelor’s Road, is a fascinating mountain route that provides access to the wonderful landscape of the Bucegi Mountains. The road crosses spectacular serpentines and offers breathtaking views along 16 kilometers, between the counties of Prahova and Dâmbovița. Among the attractions that you should not miss on your trip are Lake Bolboci, Ialomiței cave and the Babele and Sphinx natural monuments, notes the platform.

Roads closed

In December, the Ministry of Transport amended the Operating Regulations of the National Road 7 C – Transfăgărășan respectively DN 67 C – Transalpina to allow the temporary reopening of the high-altitude sections that close in the fall and reopen at the beginning of the summer. The current Regulation, updated in 2021, provides for the complete closure of the Piscu Negru-Bâlea Lac-Bâlea Cascada (Transfăgărășan) and Rânca -Obârșia Lotrului (Transalpina) sectors between October 20 and June 30, depending on weather conditions, but it also does not allow a temporary reopening of the closed sections if the weather improves significantly after the closure of traffic, according to a Draft Joint Order of the Minister of Transport and the Interior consulted by Economedia. In 2023, traffic on the high-altitude sections of Transfăgărășan and Transalpina was reopened in mid-June and closed from November 6 (details here). Details HERE
