The worst show. It takes the most water, but that’s not all

It is common knowledge that the higher the temperature, the more energy washing machine must be used for one cycle. The same is true for spinning intensity. But that’s not all. We need to be careful with one program that, according to experts, is extremely unecological and unfriendly to our wallet.

Some time ago we calculated how much you have to pay for one wash. This amount, of course, depends on many factors such as the energy class of the device, the selected program, electricity and water rates, as well as the type of detergents used. Interestingly, the latter often constitute the largest component of the total washing price. On average, the cost of one washing so it ranges from PLN 0.80 to even PLN 4.

And it can be increased by frequently selecting a delicate program. It uses much more water. Washing in this way is the most harmful to the environment and releases the most microfibers.

Scientists from the British University of Newcastle noticed that as many as 1.4 million microfibers were released from polyester fabrics during “gentle” washing. In the case of the standard cotton program, it was approximately 800,000.

It turned out that the amount of microfibers remaining after washing was not related to the spin speed or the length of breaks during the cycle. The main factor responsible for their release is… the amount of water used. The more, the worse.

Experts also warn against washing at 40 degrees Celsius. This is the most frequently chosen temperature and seems to be optimal. Not too hot, but still warm. Meanwhile, the same effect can be achieved already at 30 degrees Celsius. The German institute Siftung Warentest reported some time ago. There is no difference in the appearance of the clothes, they will also be clean. So there is no point in overpaying. Specialists calculated that a washing machine to heat water to 40 degrees Celsius will consume almost twice as much energy as in the case of 30 degrees Celsius.

What else can you do to reduce your bills and help the environment? Do not use the appliance to wash several items of clothing. Wait until the drum is full, but do not overload it. Also, use detergents sparingly. More doesn’t necessarily mean better. And you can give up the fabric softener altogether. More and more specialists believe that they are unnecessary. One of them is a chemist Sylwia Panek.

“These products are used at the rinsing stage, so the liquid itself is no longer rinsed. It remains in the fabric fibers and remains in our washing machine, contaminating it,” he explains and adds that we do not have to use it at all. We will then save money and at the same time take care of the environment and health, because fabric softeners contain many substances that may have a negative impact on our body.
