THE HAGUE – Egyptian lawyer representative at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Jasmine Moussa stated that there was only one country that justified Israel’s actions to colonize Palestine.

“Only one country is trying to justify Israel’s actions by opposing Palestinian rights to the occupied territories and justifying Israel’s expansion,” Moussa said, without naming the country, as reported by Al Jazeera.

The International Court of Justice acknowledged that the 1967 war was not fought in self-defense, but was an aggressive war.

“The right to self-determination is a central principle of international law and all states have an obligation to respect and protect this right. “This indefinite occupation violates the Palestinian people’s right to determine their political status and to achieve economic, social and cultural development,” Moussa said.

Moussa said the Middle East “desires peace and stability” and “a comprehensive and lasting resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict”.

Cairo wants the creation of a viable Palestinian state like before 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital. “Israel’s ongoing violations of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination result from the prolonged occupation, settlement and annexation of the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967,” he said.

He said the ongoing gross violations of international law were part of a “wider policy aimed at dispossessing Palestinians of their land”, which is “clearly illegal and makes the occupation as a whole unlawful”.

“It is surprising that some countries do not want the court to provide its legal opinion. What message does this send about their respect for international justice and the rule of law?” he asked.

The courts have jurisdiction over the matter, Moussa added. “Rather than harming the peace process, this will be an important additional element for the UN General Assembly to carry out its role. This is important given the lack of real prospects for a peaceful solution.”
