From July, electricity prices will increase dramatically. People who will have problems paying their electricity bills are to receive financial support. However, the aid does not apply to housing communities, and there, with an increase in electricity prices by 25%. Rent amounts may increase.

In the second half of the year, the maximum price for electricity for households is to be frozen at PLN 500 net per megawatt hour – such provisions are included in the act on energy vouchers. However, until July, a lower rate of PLN 412 net per megawatt hour applies.

Higher electricity rates from July. Energy voucher not for everyone

As the government informed, after the increase in the maximum electricity rate, people in a difficult financial situation will be able to count on financial assistance. It will be implemented in the form of an energy voucher – the proposed bill on this matter is to enter into force in the second half of 2024.

“In the proposed wording of the provisions of the Act, the energy voucher will be a cash benefit for households whose income does not exceed PLN 2,500 per person in a single-person household or PLN 1,700 per person in a multi-person household,” informed the Chancellery of the Prime Minister.

However, as noted by the Audit Association of Housing Cooperatives of the Republic of Poland (ZRSM RP), the provisions contained in the Act on energy vouchers ignore many recipients who may incur much higher costs from July, because higher electricity prices may contribute to an increase in rents.

This applies to members of housing cooperatives and residents of housing communities. – Several million people live in cooperative resources, for them the provisions contained in the Energy Voucher Act may turn out to be insufficient – he said in an interview with the portal Money.pl Jerzy Jankowski, president of ZRSM RP.

They want changes to the law. They appeal to the Ministry of Climate and Environment

Members of the ZRSM RP sent an appeal to the Ministry of Climate, in which it was proposed that the government take into account the provisions of the previous act, which introduced a freeze on electricity prices. – This Act established the maximum price of electricity in the event of exceeding a specific limit for households, as well as in the event of exceeding the limit of energy consumed for the maintenance of common areas in multi-family buildings – it was reported in a letter sent by ZRSM RP to the Ministry of Climate.

As it turns out, without this change, operating costs included in rents may increase by up to 25%. This may be a serious problem for Poles who live in multi-family buildings. The energy voucher project does not cover many people, including those who benefited from frozen energy prices.

– A particularly serious problem is the lack of support for gas boiler rooms that provide heating to residents in multi-family buildings – pointed out Piotr Pałka, legal advisor and owner of the Derc Pałka law firm, in an interview with Money.pl. The government project also does not include, among others: lighting in common areas in buildings, such as staircases.
