This isn’t the first time the Garage 54 team has done an interesting/crazy experiment. It’s enough to think about when it’s four pieces flywheels were installed to a Lada, or when they made a wheel out of concrete.
In this video, they wanted to find out how to fix a Lada’s engine “rotating in the opposite direction”. For this, they had to think a lot about what to do, but in the end they came to a decision and embarked on the project.
The basic idea was that if they could turn the camshaft in the opposite direction, then the thing could work. Yes, but how do you solve this so that the tuning of the control does not slip?
They decided to reverse the camshaft, but to do that they had to cut the whole thing, cut off the two ends and replace them in order to put the control together. In addition, there was some material work with it.
Since the oil pump can only rotate in one direction, they were forced to replace it with a servo pump for lubrication, among a few other modifications. However, they did not touch the starter at all.
Since the transmission and differential remained intact, this meant that they had 4 reverse gears and one forward gear, and could only go forward in reverse. And this is the with a characteristic voice was due to the straight teeth of the reverse gear.
They even took it out for a test drive, where they pulled the Lada in with a rope, and within a short time the engine sprang to life. See a miracle, he was really able to turn in the opposite direction, by the end of the video he was doing quite well considering the conditions.
