Through his marriage to Khadijah bint Khuwailid RA, Rasulullah SAW had 7 descendants consisting of sons and daughters. One of the daughters is said to have married a man of a different religion.

She is Sayyidah Zainab RA, the eldest daughter of Rasulullah SAW in his marriage to Khadijah RA. It is said that Zainab RA married a Quraish leader named Abul Ash or Abu Al Ash bin Rabi.

According to the book Biographies of 39 Female Carvers of Islamic History by Bassam Muhammad Hamami, Zainab’s full name is Zainab binti Muhammad al-Amin bin Abdullah bin Abdul Muththalib bin Hasyim al-Qurasyyyah al-Hasyimiyah. At that time, Zainab was born when the Prophet SAW was 30 years old or about 23 years before he migrated to Medina.

Reported from the book Khadijah: True Love of the Prophet Abdul Mun’im Muhammad Umar’s work states that when Zainab RA reached the age to marry, many parents from the Quraysh wanted their sons to marry Zainab RA.

This is because Zainab RA is the daughter of someone who is known to be the most honest and trustworthy, namely Rasulullah SAW, and marrying Zainab RA means becoming part of a respected family in the city.

Until then, Khadijah RA remembered that her sister, Halah bint Khuwailid, had a son the same age as Zainab RA, named Abu Al Ash bin Rabi. The young man was also known for his honesty, success in trading, and trustworthy nature.

Next, Khadijah RA met Rasulullah SAW to tell him about Abu Al Ash who wanted to propose to Zainab RA.

It is not known whether Abu Al Ash came with his family or alone. However, the Prophet SAW welcomed his proposal with open arms.

The marriage between Zainab RA and Abul Ash took place a year before the revelation or before the prophethood of the Prophet SAW At the wedding, Khadijah RA presented a necklace to Zainab RA.

The Turmoil of the Marriage of Zainab RA and Abu Al Ash

Launching a book Noble Women Around the Prophet the work of Muhammad Ibrahim Salim mentioned, even though the prophetic revelation had been revealed to the Prophet SAW, Abu Al Ash still maintained the beliefs of his ancestors by worshiping idols.

Their second marriage became an interfaith marriage so that their separation was inevitable. During the hijrah period when the Muslims went to Medina, Zainab RA was among the group who moved to Medina.

One day the war between the Quraysh infidels and the Muslims also occurred, in the group of the Quraish infidels there was also Abu Al Ash. The war continued until the Muslims succeeded in winning.

Abu Al Ash was included in the Muslim captives. When the Quraysh ransomed the captives with their treasures, Zainab RA also sent her treasures and necklace to ransom her husband, Abu Al Ash bin Rabi.

When he saw the necklace, the heart of the Prophet SAW was touched as he said to the companions, “If you think to free the captive Zainab, and return the ransom then do it.”

The companions replied, “Good, O Messenger of God.” Abu Al Ash was released, and Zainab RA’s ransom was returned.

Islamic law prohibits a believing woman from marrying a non-believer man. Abu Al Ash who heard this then agreed to this. When they returned to Mecca, Abul Ash’s family said, “Let you divorce your wife, and we will find you a girl who is much more beautiful than her.”

Both separated. Abu Al Ash released Zainab RA to Medina. Until the end, collected in a book 40 Greatest Daughters, Strongest Mothers by Tethy Ezokanzo Abu Al Ash was guided by Allah SWT and converted to Islam.

Abu Al Ash returned to follow Zainab RA in the 7th year of Hijriah. Rasulullah SAW was very happy to receive his son-in-law back.
