American Cat Janice, who went viral for dedicating her last song to her son and inspiring a TikTok trend, has died of cancer. She released her hit Dance You Outta My Head from the hospice at the beginning of this year. “She will rest in peace knowing that she can continue to provide for her son financially through her music,” her family said.

Janice was diagnosed in March 2022 with sarcoma, a rare form of cancer of the bones or soft tissues. Although she announced several months later that she was cancer-free after surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, the disease returned in her lungs last year. At the beginning of this year she was admitted to a hospice. She kept her followers informed about her life on social media and during the final treatments she said that she had transferred the rights to her music to her seven-year-old son Loren.

Since she released Dance Outta My Head early this year, a song she dedicated to her son, the song has topped several charts, such as the TikTok Billboard Top 50 and reached the top 10 of Billboard’s dance and electronic chart. Her music video has been viewed 57 million times online.

Janice, whose real name is Catherine Ipsan, wanted to release the song to secure her son’s future financially. “I have the rough news that cancer has won,” she said. “My tumors tripled overnight.”

Her story resonated with her followers and in no time her song went viral on TikTok. People shared videos of themselves dancing to her music. “I’m honestly so blown away by everyone’s love and how everyone has supported me through this,” Janice said in an interview with Today at the end of January. “I really didn’t expect to be here. I truly believe it is a miracle to be able to experience this. I’m just really happy to be here.”

Her husband, Kyle Higginbotham, says he hopes her music career is remembered as more than a “sad story.” “It’s not just some girl making a song because she’s dying of cancer,” he said. “Cat is a true artist and has put every minute of her life into it, right up to the end.”
