Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges Amid Climate Goals

In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) announced that global renewable energy capacity additions reached unprecedented levels in 2023, with solar and wind power leading the charge. The agency’s World Energy Transitions Outlook 2023 highlights that renewable energy now accounts for 38% of the world’s electricity generation, up from just 29% five years ago.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) installations saw the most dramatic increase, with IRENA reporting that over 500 gigawatts of new solar capacity was added globally last year alone. “This is a historic milestone,” said IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera. “The cost of solar and wind energy continues to drop, making renewables the most competitive energy source in most regions of the world.”

The report also underscores the critical role of policy support, noting that countries with strong renewable energy mandates—such as the European Union, China, and the United States—have driven the majority of growth. The EU, for instance, aims to derive 45% of its energy from renewables by 2030, while China remains the world’s largest installer of wind and solar capacity.

Despite the progress, challenges remain. IRENA warns that to meet the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, renewable energy deployment must accelerate by three times the current rate. “The window for action is closing,” La Camera cautioned. “We need to see a massive scaling up of investments in grid infrastructure, energy storage, and emerging technologies like green hydrogen.”

In related news, the Global Wind Energy Council reported that wind power installations grew by 20% in 2023, with offshore wind projects contributing significantly to this expansion. The council’s CEO, Ben Backwell, emphasized that offshore wind is now a key pillar of Europe’s energy transition, with projects under development capable of powering millions of homes.

Looking ahead, IRENA projects that by 2030, renewable energy could supply 60% of the world’s electricity demand, assuming current policy trends continue. However, the agency stresses that greater ambition and international cooperation are essential to bridge the gap to net-zero emissions by 2050.
