A prominent Palestinian doctor from al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza died in an Israeli prison after more than four months in detention. The Palestinian advocacy group that reported the doctor’s death, suspects that the Palestinian doctor was tortured while in Israeli detention.

Al Jazeera reported that Dr Adnan al-Barash, head of orthopedics at Gaza’s largest medical facility, was detained by Israeli forces while treating patients at al-Awda Hospital in the north of the region. He was detained along with a group of other doctors in December last year.

With Dr Al Barash’s death, the Gaza Health Ministry said the total number of medical personnel killed since Israel’s war on Gaza broke out in October had reached 496.

“The killing of Dr al-Barash is not the last crime considering that the conditions of the prisoners in the prison are highly classified, especially those arrested from the Gaza Strip,” he said.

According to the two Palestinian advocacy groups, citing the Palestinian authorities, doctor Barsh died on April 19. “His body is still being held,” said the two groups.

When AFP tried to confirm the news, Israel denied it, saying, “We are not aware of such an incident.”

During his lifetime, Dr Al-Barash was known as one of the most famous doctors in the Gaza Strip. He actively served patients who were victims of Israeli attacks until the last time he was arrested.

Al-Barash, 50, was arrested along with a group of other doctors in December at al-Awda Hospital near the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. A prisoner’s rights group said his body was still being held by Israeli authorities.

The fate of the other doctors remains unknown.

Although attacks on medical facilities and health workers are prohibited under international humanitarian law, according to the Geneva Conventions, the Israeli military has repeatedly targeted them. The Health Ministry said around 1,500 medical workers were also injured during the war, while 309 people are still being held in Israeli prisons.
