Trump to Host meeting on UN Reform, Signaling Continued Push to Re-Shape Global Order
Former President Donald Trump is scheduled to host a meeting on Thursday focused on reforming the united Nations, continuing his long-held critique of the international association adn signaling a desire to reshape the post-World War II global order. The meeting will be held at the U.S. Institute of Peace,a location currently embroiled in controversy following a takeover by the Trump administration.
Trump has consistently criticized the UN, alleging inefficiencies and bias. During his presidency, he withdrew the U.S. from several UN agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNESCO, and cut funding to others. He also repeatedly questioned the value of the UN Security Council, suggesting the need for option frameworks for international cooperation. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-plans-meeting-un-reform-signals-continued-push-re-shape-global-order-2024-05-16/
The upcoming meeting appears to be an attempt to rally support for alternative approaches to global security and diplomacy. However, many of America’s customary allies in Europe and elsewhere have expressed reluctance to join what thay perceive as a potential effort to circumvent the UN Security Council. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/trump-plans-meeting-un-reform-signals-continued-push-re-shape-global-order-2024-05-16/
The choice of the U.S. Institute of Peace as the venue is also drawing attention. In December 2023, the State Department announced the renaming of the institute to the Donald J. Trump U.S. Institute of Peace. This followed the Trump administration’s seizure of the facility in 2023 and the dismissal of nearly all of its staff, actions that are currently the subject of legal challenges from former employees and executives of the non-profit think tank. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/trump-to-host-meeting-on-un-reform-at-institute-he-seized-and-renamed
