Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced his intention to pursue legal action against the BBC next week, stemming from his dissatisfaction with the editing of a recent speech featured on the Panorama program. This follows the BBC’s apology for a broadcast that inadvertently suggested Trump directly incited violence, a claim the corporation maintains was unintentional.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Friday evening, Trump stated his potential damages could range from $1 billion to $5 billion. He indicated the lawsuit would likely be filed sometime next week, escalating a dispute that has already garnered significant attention.
The BBC’s Apology and Trump’s Response
The BBC acknowledged on Friday that the editing of Trump’s January 6,2021,speech created a mistaken impression
that he had explicitly called for violent action. Despite issuing a formal apology, the BBC declined to offer any financial compensation to the former president.
