Austrian Space Hub Set for Major Upgrade at Graz University of Technology

Graz, Austria – A cornerstone of Austria’s burgeoning space program, the facility at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) responsible for building, testing and controlling nanosatellites is set to undergo a comprehensive renovation. The project, slated to begin this summer, will modernize the infrastructure that has played a pivotal role in the success of missions like TUGSAT-1, UniBRITE, OPS-SAT, and PRETTY, earning the ground station the affectionate nickname “Austria-Houston” among staff. This investment underscores Austria’s commitment to space exploration and technological advancement, ensuring the continuation of groundbreaking research and development in the field of space science.

Since 2013, the Inffeldgasse campus at TU Graz has been a hub of activity for Austrian space endeavors. The project aims to secure the long-term usability of the structure, which is currently clad in precast concrete panels. “One can maintain operations for our projects, the antenna system on the roof will remain accessible, the offices will be relocated to campus, the laboratories will be moved into containers, and the cleanroom will be sealed. However, we will have a cleanroom cabin in temporary operation,” explained Manuela Wenger, responsible for monitoring satellite communication, as reported by ORF Steiermark. Continued Research and Rooftop Observatory

The rooftop of the building will continue to serve as a vital research platform. The satellite ground station located there is used to coordinate and remotely control the scientific experiments conducted by TU Graz’s satellites. Propagation experiments and free-space optics measurements are also carried out on the rooftop, leveraging the unique environment for advanced research. The planned installation of targeted shading with newly planted trees and a new thermal envelope with external sun protection will further enhance the building’s energy efficiency.

The last partial renovation of the building occurred twenty years ago, and many of the technical systems are now outdated and do not meet current energy efficiency requirements.
