Twitter (Now X) Launches Communities in 2021 to Connect Like-Minded Users on the Platform

X is shutting down its Communities feature due to low usage and rampant spam, the company confirmed on April 23, 2026. Launched in 2021 when the platform was still known as Twitter, Communities were designed to help users connect around shared interests. Though, according to X’s Head of Product Nikita Bier, the feature saw minimal adoption while becoming a significant source of abuse on the platform.

Bier stated that Communities were used by less than 0.4% of X’s user base yet contributed to 80% of spam reports, financial scams, and malware incidents on the service. The feature often devolved into channels for driving traffic to external creators, particularly through compensated clipping and user-acquisition schemes for platforms like Kick, rather than fostering organic community engagement.

The shutdown follows an initial deadline of May 6, 2026, which was extended after creator feedback. X now plans to permanently disable Communities at the end of next month, specifically on May 30, 2026. Bier acknowledged that a modest number of successful Communities will need to migrate elsewhere but emphasized that maintaining the feature was no longer justified given its disproportionate burden on resources.

“Communities had a great vision, but they were used by less than 0.4% of users—yet contributed to 80% of spam reports, financial scams, and malware on X,” Bier wrote on X on April 23, 2026. “It occupied half the team’s time some weeks, while the rest of the app suffered.”

The decision reflects broader challenges X has faced in balancing user engagement with safety and spam prevention since its rebranding from Twitter. While Communities were initially positioned as a rival to Reddit’s subreddits, Bier described the outcome as a “Temu version of subreddits,” suggesting the feature failed to deliver meaningful, interest-based discussion at scale.

X said it will redirect investment toward XChat, its emerging messaging initiative, as part of a strategic shift to prioritize features with higher user value and lower moderation overhead. The company has not announced plans to replace Communities with a similar interest-based grouping tool.

Users seeking to preserve content from active Communities are advised to export their data before the May 30, 2026 shutdown date. Official guidance on data migration and feature retirement is available through X’s Help Center and product updates.

As of the announcement date, no formal user vote or public consultation was conducted prior to the extension of the shutdown timeline. X has not disclosed the exact number of active Communities affected by the closure, nor has it provided compensation or migration tools for moderators or creators who relied on the feature for audience development.

The move underscores the ongoing difficulty social platforms face in nurturing niche communities without enabling misuse. Similar features on other networks, such as Facebook Groups and Discord servers, continue to operate under stricter moderation models, though they too face persistent challenges with spam and coordination of harmful activity.

For now, X Communities will remain accessible until May 30, 2026, after which the feature will be permanently disabled and all associated data subject to X’s standard data retention policies.
