Paramount+ Lands Exclusive UFC Rights in landmark Deal, Signaling a Shift in Sports streaming
Paramount+ just secured a major win in teh battle for sports streaming dominance. The company will now be the exclusive home for all UFC numbered events in the U.S., alongside the organization’s Fight Night series. This expanded partnership, finalized swiftly after Skydance Media’s acquisition of Paramount, represents a significant strategic move for both companies.
The core message TKO leadership wants to convey is clear: “You’re going to automatically get UFC’s numbered fights and the rest of the portfolio.” This comprehensive offering is designed to drive subscriptions and bolster Paramount+’s position in a competitive market.
A Busy Week for TKO and Paramount
This deal caps a whirlwind week for both organizations. Skydance Media officially took control of Paramount on Thursday, ushering in new leadership under CEO David Ellison.Simultaneously, TKO, the parent company of UFC and WWE, announced a five-year, $1.6 billion agreement with ESPN for WWE’s premium live events.
This new arrangement with Paramount evolved quickly. Initially, TKO envisioned selling 30 Fight Night events to Paramount while reserving premium numbered events for a different media partner. However, following the Skydance-Paramount deal’s closure, negotiations rapidly shifted, resulting in this all-encompassing agreement within 48 hours.
Why This Deal Matters: driving Subscriptions & Scarcity of Rights
TKO CEO Ariel Emanuel emphasized the importance of this partnership during a CNBC interview. He highlighted TKO’s proven ability to drive subscriptions,a crucial factor in Ellison’s overall strategy for paramount+.
Ellison himself underscored the strategic importance of securing the entire UFC package. He explained that opportunities to acquire top-tier sports rights are increasingly rare. With Formula 1 rights likely heading to Apple and Major League Baseball’s media rights reorganization not anticipated until 2028, Paramount faces limited opportunities to add comparable assets.
“UFC is a unicorn asset that comes up about onc a decade,” Ellison stated, adding that he is a dedicated UFC fan.
The Appeal of UFC for Streamers
UFC events are especially valuable to streaming services due to their year-round schedule. Unlike seasonal sports, UFC consistently delivers live programming, incentivizing fans to maintain their monthly subscriptions.
Here’s a breakdown of what UFC brings to the table:
43 Live Events Annually: Providing consistent content throughout the year.
350 hours of Live programming: A substantial volume of engaging, live sports content.
Global Reach: UFC matches are currently broadcast in over 210 countries.
Expanding the Partnership: International Rights
Paramount is actively pursuing the acquisition of UFC’s international rights to complement its U.S. coverage. These rights become available on a rolling basis, with approximately one-third up for renewal each year. Paramount will have a 30-day exclusive negotiation window for each country’s rights as they come up for renewal.
As Mark Shapiro, TKO COO, succinctly put it: ”We’re getting the brand, we’re getting the reach, and they’ll get the signups.” This deal is a win-win, positioning Paramount+ as a premier destination for combat sports fans and solidifying TKO’s position as a leading sports and entertainment company.
