Lammy explained this initiative “will give greater confidence to people in the UK using OpenAI’s software and encourage hesitant organizations to take the AI leap.” This proactive approach demonstrates the UK government’s dedication to facilitating a smooth and secure transition into an AI-powered world.

These efforts are integral to the government’s broader Plan for Change, which aims to position the UK as a frontrunner in the ethical and practical application of AI.However, lammy also cautioned against the potential for misuse. He stressed the importance of international cooperation to ensure AI benefits open societies and doesn’t undermine them.
He echoed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s belief that AI “has the potential to improve every aspect of our lives,” reinforcing the UK’s goal of harnessing AI as a tool for empowerment, not displacement.
