The UK Health Security Agency has estimated 2,877 heat-associated deaths across England during two distinct periods of hot weather in May and June 2026, according to an interim assessment published by the agency. The provisional findings highlight a sharp public-health toll from rising temperatures early in the summer season, placing the preliminary tally close to the record levels seen during the prolonged heatwaves of 2022.

Both months broke temperature records across England, with measurements captured by the UKHSA showing extreme peaks during both weather events. The June heatwave also forced the issuance of a red heat-health alert—the highest possible warning level—marking only the second time such an alert has been triggered in England.

The interim mortality breakdown attributes 753 deaths to the late-May heat episode and 2,124 deaths to the June heatwave. The combined total of 2,877 heat-associated fatalities is already approaching the 2,985 deaths recorded across the entire year of 2022, and stands at almost double the 1,504 deaths reported for the summer of 2025.

The first severe spell ran from May 24 to May 27, delivering a notable early-season shock before local communities and public services had adapted to warm summer conditions. During this period, Kew Gardens recorded a high of 31.5°C on May 26.

The subsequent June event lasted eight days, from June 21 to June 28, bringing exceptional temperatures and a significantly larger health impact. Lingwood in Norfolk reached 37.7°C on June 26, prompting the Met Office and UKHSA to issue the rare red heat-health alert to warn of widespread risks to health and wellbeing.

Public health officials stress that hot weather occurring earlier in the calendar year often carries a heavier toll because populations have had less time to acclimatize. As we move through the summer, it is so important for people to be able to look out for their health and help those who are more vulnerable to the hot conditions,” Cooper stated.
