Ukraine Shifts Focus to Domestic Drone Production to Counter Reliance on Imports
Ukraine is actively working to replace its reliance on Chinese-made drones with domestically produced models, according to the nation’s newly appointed Defense Minister. This strategic move aims to reduce dependence on imports and circumvent potential disruptions to sanctioned supply lines amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
Mykhailo Fedorov, appointed in January, emphasized the continued importance of drones as a key component of Ukraine’s asymmetric warfare strategy. This approach leverages innovative weaponry and tactics against a larger adversary, proving crucial in defending against the Russian invasion.
While both Ukraine and Russia have considerably increased drone production since 2022 – with Ukraine potentially capable of producing up to 4 million drones annually by 2025 – imported drones and components, particularly from China, remain vital. Though, given China’s perceived friendly relationship with Russia and its own susceptibility to Western sanctions, Ukraine is prioritizing self-sufficiency.
Fedorov highlighted the need to find alternatives to popular consumer models like the DJI Mavic. Plans are underway to develop a local equivalent boasting a similar camera but with an extended flight range, with testing anticipated to begin shortly.
Addressing the challenge posed by Russia’s frequent use of Geran-2 one-way attack drones, Ukraine has implemented a unique incentive programme. The nation is offering US$20,000 (S$25,700) for each Russian drone destroyed by interceptor drones, resulting in a considerable increase in interceptor availability, reaching nearly 40,000 in January.
Fedorov, a former Deputy Prime Minister responsible for digital conversion and technology policy, is a strong proponent of drone-centric warfare. He has been instrumental in securing critical technologies for Ukraine’s military, including Starlink terminals and drones, and is a trusted advisor to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Future initiatives include the creation of specialized units dedicated to identifying and neutralizing Russian drone operators on the battlefield. Fedorov stated the president’s objective is to establish a thorough system capable of disrupting enemy operations in the air and on the ground, while concurrently launching asymmetric and cyberattacks against russia’s economy. The ultimate goal is to escalate the cost of the war for Russia to a point where a negotiated peace becomes unavoidable.
