The experiences of children like Danylo “danik” Yatsentyu, now 16, paint a harrowing picture of life in Russian captivity. Taken from a youth recreation camp three years ago, danik and his friends were subjected to relentless propaganda designed to demonize Ukraine.
“They don’t want to return us back because ‘They’re Nazis. They will kill us and they will eat us there,'” Danik recounted to CBN news.”And that’s very risky.And I believed that propaganda because everybody kept saying that its dangerous to come back to Ukraine.”
This deliberate manipulation extends beyond fear-mongering. Children are reportedly being placed in Russian schools, re-educated with a pro-Russian curriculum, and even offered for adoption to Russian families – effectively erasing their Ukrainian identity.

Kuleba’s organization has been working tirelessly, acting as an “underground railroad” to freedom, rescuing children from military camps, academies, and the Russian army.

For parents like Alla Yatsentyu, Danik’s mother, the ordeal is a living nightmare. She spent months desperately searching for her son, finally reaching out to Save Ukraine for assistance. Their intervention ultimately led to a joyous reunion, but thousands of families remain separated, living with the agonizing uncertainty of not knowing where their children are or if they are even alive.
“I’ve been doing the impossible. I’ve been doing everything to just rescue him,” Alla shared, her voice filled with anguish. She now firmly believes that Russia can never be trusted, stating, ”From our children, russia wants to make them their slaves and their soldiers.Russia is not our friend.”
International Efforts and the Role of First lady Melania Trump
The plight of these children has begun to garner international attention. Former First Lady melania Trump, recognizing the gravity of the situation, penned a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging him to facilitate the return of all ukrainian children.
“A child’s soul knows no borders, no flags,” she stated. “We must foster a future for our children. Which is rich with potential security and complete with free will. A world where dreams will be realized rather than faded by war.”
While Putin responded by establishing a team to work with her representative, the results have been limited, with only eight children returned to date. however, Kuleba emphasizes the importance of continued advocacy. “She can help to verify the kids and bring them home,” he says. “We believe this, and we really need her…It’s a first step, but I only ask her not stop.”
