Russia-backed separatists seized control of her hometown, Makiivka, back in 2014. Faced with this new reality, she initially sought refuge in Kostiantynivka, a city within the Donetsk region that, for a time, offered a semblance of safety.
However, recent months have witnessed a devastating escalation in attacks. Russia has relentlessly bombarded Kostiantynivka,reducing it to ruins. Ukrainian soldiers now report the city is too dangerous for even manned patrols, relying rather on unmanned ground vehicles to navigate the shattered streets.
“I’m not among the faint of heart. I stayed until the very end,” she shared, her voice reflecting a quiet determination. “Now I am homeless. A homeless person at 70 years old.”
