ULM Football Coach Bryant Vincent Named Interim Athletic Director
Bryant Vincent, head football coach at the University of louisiana Monroe (ULM),will also serve as the school’s interim athletic director. This proclamation comes following the resignation of John Hartwell, who held the position since February 2023. Hartwell stepped down to pursue other professional opportunities, according to the university.
Vincent is entering his second season leading the Warhawks football program. He will oversee the entire athletic department during the search for a permanent athletic director.Fortunately, this additional role will not alter the terms of Vincent’s existing contract, which extends through the 2029 season.
A Familiar, though Less Common, Leadership Model
This dual role – football coach and athletic director – isn’t entirely unprecedented in college athletics. Historically, several legendary coaches have successfully managed both responsibilities. Consider figures like Bear Bryant (Texas A&M and Alabama),Darrell Royal (Texas),and Frank Broyles (Arkansas).More recently, Barry Alvarez excelled in this capacity at Wisconsin.
Though, it’s a practice that has become increasingly rare in modern college sports. The demands of both positions are substantial, requiring notable time and focus.
University President Carrie Castille expressed her gratitude for Vincent’s willingness to take on these added duties. She emphasized the support he’ll receive from the associate athletic directors.
“Bryant has the support of the associate ADs and will be working closely with them to ensure he can serve both roles and win games,” Castille stated. “He has already gained the support of this community as a head coach, and I hope that everyone will join me in rallying around him to support ULM Athletics. I have no doubt in Bryant’s ability to serve in both roles with excellence and a winning spirit.”
Vincent’s early Impact at ULM
vincent quickly made a positive impression during his first season in Monroe. He guided the Warhawks to a remarkable 5-1 start, their best record as 1987. Sadly, the team faced challenges in the latter half of the season, ultimately dropping their final six games.
Despite the late-season struggles, Vincent’s initial success generated excitement and optimism within the ULM community. Now, you can expect him to leverage that momentum as he navigates his expanded role.
This is a pivotal moment for ULM Athletics. Vincent’s leadership will be crucial as the university seeks a permanent athletic director and strives for continued success on and off the field.
