The United States government imposed sanctions on several Iranian security officials and financial network members on January 15,2026,citing their roles in the violent suppression of protests and the laundering of billions of dollars derived from oil revenues. These actions follow widespread anti-government demonstrations in Iran, though protest activity has reportedly decreased in recent days due to increased repression and internet restrictions.
Targeting Key Individuals and Entities
According to a statement from the US Treasury Department, the sanctions target individuals and entities involved in both the crackdown on peaceful protests and the circumvention of international financial regulations. Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent affirmed the US commitment to supporting the Iranian people’s demands for freedom and justice. He stated the US will continue to utilize all available tools against those responsible for human rights abuses within the Iranian regime.
Among those sanctioned is Ali larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, accused by Washington of ordering the use of force against protestors. Reuters reports that this is a significant escalation in US pressure on Iranian officials.
Crackdown on Protests and Alleged Human Rights Violations
Four regional commanders from Iran’s Law Enforcement forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were also sanctioned for their involvement in suppressing protests in the Lorestan and Fars provinces. Reports indicate severe human rights violations during these crackdowns.specifically, security forces in Fars province are alleged to have killed numerous peaceful protestors, and hospitals in the region are reportedly overwhelmed with patients suffering from gunshot wounds, lacking the capacity to admit other patients. Human Rights Watch has documented similar patterns of violence and repression during Iranian protests.
