US and Israeli officials confirmed that the encounter provided a much-needed opportunity to ease bilateral tensions that have steadily mounted since the outbreak of war involving Iran. According to Axios, the Tuesday evening session brought the two leaders face-to-face for a candid exchange. An Israeli official described the discussion as a frank conversation covering Netanyahu’s remarks regarding Vance’s recent public critiques and Israel’s standing within the US Republican party. A US official similarly confirmed that the talk was direct, while another American official noted that Vance and Netanyahu engaged in a friendly and productive dialogue addressing regional issues of mutual importance to both nations. Vice President Vance’s office declined to comment on the meeting.
The Washington meeting followed a separate White House visit on July 28 by Netanyahu, during which Donald Trump and the Israeli prime minister met behind closed doors without media access. According to Florida-based body language expert Lillian Glass, who has served as a behavioral analysis expert witness in US federal and state courts, photographs from that gathering showed Trump appearing genuinely happy to see Netanyahu with a sincere smile. In contrast, Glass noted that Vance appeared distinctively tense during a joint photo opportunity with Trump and Netanyahu, pointing to a rigid smile, tightened jaw, and curled left-hand fingers that reflected physical discomfort compared to Trump’s relaxed posture. Glass added that Vance seemed to exist in a physical gap and apart from the group, contrasting with Trump’s completely relaxed legs directed toward Netanyahu.
Policy Clashes Over Iran and the Memorandum of Understanding
The tension between Washington and Jerusalem stems largely from diverging strategies on Iran and war policy, with Vance functioning as an intense skeptic of foreign interventionism and a strong advocate for seeking peace with Iran. Following the escalation of hostilities, Vance emerged as a leading skeptic of Netanyahu within Trump’s core circle and a primary defender of an understanding reached between the US and Iran. Netanyahu opposed the memorandum of understanding, quietly hoping it would collapse on its own rather than issuing a direct public challenge—an expectation that materialized when the agreement eventually broke down. Mutual grievances escalated as Vance accused Netanyahu of working through staff, allies, and pro-Israel media within the United States to undermine and politically weaken him, while Netanyahu privately faulted Vance’s role in the conflict and Vance accused Netanyahu of being insufficiently loyal to President Trump by stirring opposition to the US-Iran memo.

While the meeting between Trump and Netanyahu proceeded behind closed doors, Trump also held meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the same day—an encounter that Vance missed due to attending the funeral of the late South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
