A small boarding house for rent at an affordable price in Shanghai, China with a rental rate of only US$ 40 or Rp. 638,720 (exchange rate Rp. 15,968) per month. However, the toilet is located right in front of the bed.

The news about the boarding house started from an advertising video that went viral on social media. The video shows a 53-foot boarding house located directly under the stairs.

“Truly a dream house!” said the housing agent in the viral advertising video quoted from The South China Morning Post, Saturday (5/4/2024). The man seemed to show that renting a boarding house was an opportunity that should not be wasted.

This boarding house has a complete bedroom feature, but with a toilet and sink located right in front of the mattress. Additionally, there was only enough living room for one person to stand.

The boundaries between boarding rooms are separated by a wooden board. The man explained that tenants only need to spend Rp. 638,720 per month to sleep in one of the boarding house units.

“The flat is a small duplex. But be careful when you get home, the stairs are a bit steep,” explained the man, pointing towards the stairs.

After that, the man said there was a kitchen equipped with a stove available to the left of the living room.

“There’s even a real window. It’s very spacious. If your friends come you can cook and sit on the stairs to eat together,” he continued.

The bathroom and bedroom in the apartment are combined. As a result, tenants have to sleep facing the toilet and water heater hanging next to the bed.

“Be careful when showering, your bed will get wet,” the agent said.

“If you want to add air conditioning, the rental price will increase by 100 yuan (Rp. 223,552). However, it doesn’t seem necessary because living in this room already makes your heart cold,” joked the agent.

The ad went viral on social media, especially among young workers who are struggling to make a living in big cities in China. Because, according to Baisen Appraisal, the average rental price for a one-bedroom apartment or boarding house in Shanghai is currently around 5,143 yuan (US$ 710) or Rp. 11.3 million. Meanwhile, almost half of all Shanghai residents earn under 6,000 yuan (US$ 830) or Rp. 13.2 million per month.

The average monthly salary of workers in the service sector such as waiters, security guards and cashiers is only around 3,500-5,000 yuan (US$ 480-690) or Rp. 7.6-11 million. Therefore, in an interview with Xinmin Evening Posta property agent said boarding houses and apartments with a monthly rental price of less than 1,000 yuan (US$ 140) or Rp. 2.2 million were guaranteed to sell immediately after being advertised.

This boarding house, which has a toilet in front of the mattress, is actually very popular among couriers and online motorcycle taxi drivers.

“I can’t imagine how hard it is for the people living here and how strong their hearts are,” said one netizen.

“What’s clear is that a ‘flat’ is just a toilet with a stove,” said another.

“Actually, it’s not bad. As long as I can earn money, I think suffering of this magnitude is still acceptable,” said another netizen.
