Walmart has announced plans to remodel more than 650 stores across the United States while opening about 20 new locations in 2026 and early 2027, according to the company’s April 16 news release. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to create jobs, strengthen local economies, and improve the shopping experience for customers through updated layouts, expanded services, and modernized facilities.
The retail giant emphasized that these investments build on its 2024 commitment to open or convert over 150 new locations while refreshing its existing store portfolio. Walmart stated that the remodels and new openings will generate construction jobs during implementation and long-term roles in retail, pharmacy, and store leadership once completed.
Among the changes customers may notice at updated stores are wider aisles, updated layouts, new displays with expanded assortments, and more pickup and delivery service options including express delivery. The company too plans to refresh interiors and exteriors with improved parking and landscaping, add new digital touchpoints to showcase its online assortment for in-store shoppers, and update vision centers and pharmacies with private consultation rooms.
Walmart’s Neighborhood Markets will see expanded deli and hot bar selections, pharmacy delivery options, improved lighting and fixtures, and upgraded areas for fulfilling online grocery orders. Select Neighborhood Markets are being updated through a rapid remodel program designed to complete projects quicker with minimal customer disruption.
The company has already opened several new stores this year, including Walmart Supercenters in Eastvale, California; Apollo Beach, Jacksonville, and The Villages, Florida; and a Walmart Neighborhood Market in Ocala, Florida. Later this year, Walmart plans to open a new supercenter in Celina, Texas, and expand the supercenter in Tucson, Arizona.
In 2024, Walmart had announced plans to open more than 100 new stores through 2029. The latest announcement of new locations and remodels follows Walmart’s recent redesign of its Great Value private-label brand, which spans thousands of products and marks the first major refresh of the line in over a decade.
While Walmart has not yet revealed a full list of locations for the 20 new stores, the company confirmed it opened nine new stores last year in Alabama, California, Florida, New Jersey, Texas, and Utah. The retailer noted that the ongoing investments are intended to make shopping faster and more convenient for customers while supporting local job creation and economic growth.
As of the April 20, 2026 announcement, Walmart continues to roll out renovations across its portfolio, with numerous stores already receiving improvements and additional implementations planned for the coming months. The company maintains that these efforts are aligned with its goal of enhancing accessibility, efficiency, and customer satisfaction across its U.S. Operations.
