Wasabi sharpens the memory

The spicy green paste is not only delicious with sushi, wasabi is also very healthy. It is said to kill bacteria and inhibit inflammation. It is also said to prevent tooth decay and reduce the risk of blood clots and asthma. And if that isn’t enough, it also boosts your memory, scientists from Tohoku University in Japan, among others, saw.

Memory boost in the elderly

The scientists examined 72 people aged sixty to eighty. Half received a dietary supplement with wasabi every day, the rest a placebo. After twelve weeks, the short- and long-term memory of the wasabi eaters appeared to have improved significantly. They were also better at making connections between different memories. Hopefully from now on they will never forget to take a wasabi pill every day.

Even shorter:

  • The presence of isothiocyanate in wasabi is said to cause the healing effect.
  • These types of chemical compounds can also be found in mustard and broccoli.
  • Is wasabi too spicy for you? Good news: in pill form all the taste is gone from the stuff.

Also interesting: why you sometimes forget what you’re doing as soon as you enter a room.
