American actress, singer and dancer Chita Rivera has died in New York at the age of 91. Rivera was famous thanks to her long career on Broadway. She broke through as Anita West Side Story.

Her daughter Lisa Mordente announced Rivera’s death on Tuesday, among others The New York Times in The Guardian.

Rivera made her breakthrough in 1957 as Anita West Side Story. She then played in numerous theater productions, such as Chicago, Bring Back Birdie in Kiss of the Spider Woman. She also played roles in films and TV series.

The Broadway star was nominated for a Tony Award ten times during her long career. That is an important American prize in the musical and theater world. Rivera won the award twice.

In 2009, Rivera received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from then US President Barack Obama. That is the highest honor an American citizen can receive.
