For many drivers, the numbers and letters on the side of the tires are incomprehensible hieroglyphs. The Swiss Automobile Club (TCS) deciphered their codes. There are many different markings on tires, each of them has a specific function and each is important in its own way.
What do the letters and numbers on the tire mean?
1. Tire width in mm
2. The ratio of the height and width of the tire in percentages – 65 percent of the width of the tire 195 mm
3. Tire type. R = radial tires
4. Rim diameter in inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm)
5. Load index (91 = 615 kg per tire)
6. Maximum speed index (H = 210 km/h)
7. Manufacturer and name of the tire
8. Registration numbers according to the regulations of the country (in this case USA).
8. The number symbolizes the date of manufacture. 0809 = 8th week, 2009
9. Tubeless = tire without an additional inner tube
10. Snowflake symbol – winter tires
11. M+S (Mud&Snow) are winter or all-season tires
12. ECE marking for European standard (plus country number)
13. Run Flat technology (tires that can be driven for a certain time and flat)
14. Wear indicator (on tread surface)
