“When you reach certain state positions, you must decide what is best for Romania and then harmonize things so that colleagues are made clear that this is the best for Romania, beyond being pesedists or penelists”, the president declared on Tuesday PSD, Marcel Ciolacu, when he was asked by journalists how he comments on the dissatisfaction of some PSD colleagues regarding the possibility of joint lists with PNL in the European parliamentary elections.

Ciolacu also said that a final decision regarding the common lists for the European Parliament and merging the local elections with the European Parliament elections has not been taken yet and that all decisions will be announced on Wednesday.

“If we come with a country project for certain elections, we come with a project for all elections”, Ciolacu also said.

PSD and PNL are moving towards merging the elections and common lists for the European Parliament, sources from the top of the two parties, who participated in the negotiations on Sunday, told G4Media.ro on Monday. The discussions lasted almost 7 hours. At the end of them, no clear decision was made, but all the information indicates that PSD and PNL have agreed on the big principles: combining the local elections, scheduled for September, with the European Parliament elections, which will take place on June 9.

The two big parties, which are part of different political families (PSD – the European Socialists, PNL – the European People’s Party), will run for the European Parliament on a common list, which would be opened by the PSD candidate. It is not clear at this point what the share of the two parties will be in the eligible seats. In total, Romania has 33 MEP seats.

It has not yet been determined who will open the list for the European Parliament. Another principle that would have been agreed on Sunday is the presidential candidate: the topic will not be discussed now, but after the European Parliament elections. The final decision would be taken on Wednesday, after the return of PNL leader Nicolae Ciucă to the country. He is on an official visit to Spain, where he will meet the president of the Senate, the leader of the Spanish Popular Party and the Romanian community.
