A fatal collision at an intersection has claimed three lives, prompting renewed calls for infrastructure improvements at a site where residents have long expressed safety concerns. Adriana Maxwell, 22, was killed early Sunday morning when the ride-share vehicle she was traveling in collided with a motorcycle on Crain Highway (Route 301) at the intersection of Governors Park Lane in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, according to Maryland State Police.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. as the ride-share driver attempted to turn onto Governors Park Lane from the highway. Police stated that the driver failed to yield the right-of-way, resulting in a collision with a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The crash proved fatal for Maxwell, as well as the two individuals on the motorcycle, identified by authorities as 48-year-old Matthew Vowell and 47-year-old Krystal Vowell, both of Friendship, Maryland.
Infrastructure Concerns and Community Advocacy
Following the tragedy, Carletta Maxwell, the mother of the young victim, publicly questioned the safety measures at the intersection, suggesting that the presence of a traffic light might have prevented the loss of life. “She was everything,” Carletta Maxwell said of her daughter. “She was my only child.”
Local residents from the nearby Balmoral community have reportedly been advocating for the installation of a traffic signal at the crossing for several years, citing the dangers of the high-speed roadway. The intersection, which serves as a junction for local residential traffic entering and exiting the highway, has been a point of contention for those who navigate the area daily. Carletta Maxwell emphasized the broader impact of the lack of traffic control, noting that the installation of a light could have potentially protected all parties involved in the collision.
“I wouldn’t wish this on anybody, and the only that I can ask is that people slow down, because wherever you’re going, it’s going to be there. But now my daughter’s life is gone,” she stated. The investigation into the circumstances of the crash, including whether speed or other factors contributed to the severity of the impact, remains ongoing by state law enforcement officials.
Planned Safety Upgrades at Route 301
In response to long-standing safety requests and the recent fatal event, the Maryland State Highway Administration has confirmed plans for physical improvements at the location. Officials stated that a dedicated left-turn lane is slated for installation on the northbound side of Route 301 to manage traffic flow more safely.
According to the agency, the design phase for these infrastructure improvements is currently 90% complete. Officials expect to break ground on the project by the end of the year. This construction is intended to address some of the visibility and turning challenges that residents have identified as hazardous. While the state has not committed to a full traffic signal at this time, the addition of the turn lane represents the current official approach to mitigating risk at the intersection.
