At the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow, Norwegian Vidts was the Belgian star on day 1, with new gold in the pentathlon. Alexander Doom impressed in the 400 meters, he easily qualified for the final.

Norwegian Vidts was the Belgian spearhead on the first day of the World Cup and completely lived up to expectations. Two years after her triumph in Belgrade, she also won World Cup gold in the pentathlon in Glasgow.

But Alexander Doom also shone in the Emirates Arena. With a series win in 46″11, he convincingly advanced to the semi-finals and what he achieved was even more impressive.

After a hell of a race, he also won his semi-final, in a personal record of 45:69. Also the fastest time of all finalists. Doom writes a piece of Belgian athletics history. Never before has a Belgian athlete been in the 400m final at an indoor World Cup.

“I never expected this, because I was not supposed to run individually. I am super satisfied, everything went smoothly today. I feel really strong, especially at the end. A medal is feasible, that will also depend of the track layout. I have confidence in myself, I know I have a good final shot.”

Eliott Crestan managed to easily qualify for the semi-finals of the 800 meters with a win in his series. Tibo De Smet also pushed through, although it took a little more effort. He was caught with the best losing times.

There was less Belgian success in the 1,500 meters. Both Elise Vanderelst and World Cup debutant Thomas Vanoppen failed in the series.

Coleman troeft Lyles af

In addition to the pentathlon, four finals were completed on the first World Cup day. In the shot put, top favorite Chase (Ealey) Jackson missed out on the gold, just like two years ago in Belgrade. Then she had to settle for silver, now with bronze.

The gold went to her great Canadian competitor Sarah Mitton, the silver went to the German Yemisi Ogunleye.

Among the men, two-time Olympic and world champion Ryan Crouser lived up to his role as favorite. The American thus won his first world indoor title.

Nicola Olyslagers caused a surprise in the high jump. The Australian was the only one to clear 1.99 meters and thus won her very first title after silver at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and bronze at the World Outdoor Championships in Budapest. Defending champion Yaroslava Mahuchich had to settle for silver.

In the 60 meter final we got the expected American clash between Noah Lyles and Christian Coleman. In the semi-finals, Coleman equaled Lyles’ best world annual performance with 6.43 and in the final the world record holder went even further.

Coleman had the best start and Lyles could no longer keep up. Coleman won in 6.41, no one ran faster this year. Lyles had to settle for silver, the bronze went to the Jamaican Ackeem Blake.

With the triumph of Christian Coleman in the 60 meters, we put an end to the first day of this World Indoor Championships.

Of course we remember that Noor Vidts is world champion in the pentathlon for the second consecutive time. Also Alexander Doom put in a great performance, he is the first Belgian ever to be in the 400m final at an indoor World Championships.

Succeeded in the 1,500 meters Elise Vanderelst in Thomas Vanoppen failed to qualify for the final. Earlier today we could Eliott Crestan in Tibo De Smet did advance to the semi-finals in the 800 meters.

Tomorrow a lot of Belgians will be in action again in Glasgow. From 11am you will be in the front row to follow everything.

Coleman takes gold!

Coleman starts off better than Lyles and he no longer manages to keep up with his compatriot. Coleman wins in 6’41, a best world year performance. Noah Lyles is second in 6’44. The bronze goes to the Jamaican Ackeem Blake in 6.46.

The final of the men’s 60 meters is the apotheosis of this first World Cup day. Last year Noah Lyles won World Championship gold in the 100 and 200 meters outdoor, this year he wants to complete his collection of titles with the world title in the 60 meters indoor and of course Olympic gold next summer in Paris.

But Lyles will have to compete against Christian Coleman. He just ran 6.43 in the semi-finals, equaling Lyles’ best world year performance.

Vidts: “It didn’t happen automatically”

It is very nice that I managed to become world champion again. That is not self-evident. The match itself was not that obvious either. What I did wasn’t all great, but it wasn’t bad either. I am very satisfied with the shot put and long jump.

Vidts ultimately takes the gold with 4,773 points. This means she remains below her personal record from Belgrade two years ago. Then she took gold with 4,929 points.

The silver goes to Saga Vanninen with 4,677 points. Sofie Dokter won the bronze, she collected 4,571 points.

First indoor world title for Crouser

Crouser doesn’t improve on his last attempt, but he doesn’t need to. The two-time Olympic and world champion conquers his first world indoor title here in Glasgow.

The silver goes to the New Zealander Tom Walsh, the bronze to the Italian Leonardo Fabbri.

In the shot put, nothing seems to matter to Ryan Crouser. He is comfortably in the lead with his throw of 22.77 meters. Tom Walsh is second with 22.07 meters, Leonardo Fabbri is on course for bronze with 21.96 meters.

Vidts is world champion!

Vidts finishes third in the final 800 meters, after Sofie Dokter and Sveva Gerevini, and remains well ahead of Vanninen. The Finnish is only eighth, almost eight seconds behind Vidts. Our compatriot takes the world title in the pentathlon for the second consecutive time!

Vidts is in a leading group of 6 athletes. Vanninen leads a chasing group, but the gap is already large.

Vidts is virtual world champion, Vanninen already has to leave a serious gap.

Vidts makes a fast start. She immediately nestles among the top three.
