Two-thirds of young people are influenced by advertising about making quick money on social media. This is evident from research by Wiser in Money Affairs, an initiative of the Ministry of Finance.

Of the more than 1,000 young people interviewed between the ages of 16 and 19, 98 percent see videos about investing in shares and crypto. According to Christian Meijer from Wijzer in Geldzaken, it is often presented as an easy way to earn a lot of money. “It’s presented as a win-win situation.”

Of the young people who have followed advice from an influencer, 39 percent say they have actually earned something from it. Meijer: “Money can be made from investing, but often no attention is paid to the risks. That is worrying.”

No more boss

According to Wiser in Money Affairs, 30 percent of young people have run into financial problems after following advice. The way in which they are approached has become increasingly intense in recent years, according to Wijzer in Geldzaken. “You used to pass a bus shelter with advertising. Now they know where to find you all day long via your smartphone.”

Meijer also notices that the advertisements often make judgments about working as an employee. “Influencers insist that you can quickly become financially independent. You no longer have to work for a boss.”

According to the research, it appears that young people who work are less financially influenced than young people without a part-time job.
