For years, connecting apartment complexes to high-speed internet has presented unique challenges. Now, a new set of standards from the Broadband Forum promises to dramatically simplify the process, bringing gigabit broadband within reach for more residents. This breakthrough leverages the power of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and, crucially, reuses existing building infrastructure.
The Challenge: MDUs and the Broadband gap
Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs) - apartments, condos, and similar buildings – often lag behind single-family homes in broadband access. This is often due to:

* Coverage or performance issues with conventional FWA for individual units.
* Restrictions imposed by property owners.
* The complexities of older building wiring.
These factors can leave residents with slower speeds and fewer choices. But that’s changing.
A New Approach: sharing 5G Capacity
A recent research project, initiated in 2023, has laid the groundwork for a solution. The core idea? Allow multiple tenants to share a single, high-capacity 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) connection. Rather of running new cables to every apartment, the new standards enable operators to utilize existing in-building wiring – like twisted pair, telephone lines, or coaxial cabling – from a central point in the building (attic or basement).
This isn’t just a theoretical concept. The broadband Forum’s new specifications allow a single 5G FWA modem to deliver high-speed connectivity to multiple tenants.
