Mandrake: Cultivating Mystery adn Folklore in Failbetter Games’ New Sim
Failbetter Games, the studio behind critically acclaimed narrative adventures Sunless Sea and Fallen london, is cultivating something new: Mandrake, a folklore-infused gardening sim with a delightfully eerie twist. Revealed earlier this summer and showcased at the recent Wholesome Snack showcase, Mandrake promises a unique blend of rural life, ancient mysteries, and demanding neighbors.
Here’s what you need to know about this intriguing upcoming title.
A Debt to Pay: Meet The Yolf
You inherit an old mandrake lodge and a rather pressing problem. Your ancestors owe a ample debt – 962 gold crowns, to be exact – to The Yolf. This isn’t your average landlord; The Yolf is a giant, horned cat creature who expects payment in mandrake.
Failbetter describes him as a “furry, friendly neighbor who nonetheless demands payment for debts owed to him by your ancestors.” So,prepare to get your hands dirty.
Gameplay: Gardening, foraging, and Uncanny Encounters
Mandrake centers around rebuilding your life and paying off this ancestral debt through cultivation and exploration.
here’s a glimpse of what you can expect:
* Gardening: Grow a variety of fantastical produce, including goose trees (perhaps yielding golden fruit!).
* Foraging, Fishing, and Mining: Explore a world brimming with “old, wild powers” and uncover hidden resources.
* Social Interaction: Engage in dialogue-rich conversations with a colorful cast of characters – people, spirits, gods, and bogles. The dialogue system is reminiscent of Disco Elysium, offering a laid-back, portrait-focused experience.
* Mysterious Encounters: The world of Mandrake comes alive at night, with more perilous and uncanny beings emerging after sunset.
* World Exploration: Befriend a river, eavesdrop on the dead, spend a haunted night at the Butcher’s Oak, or even enjoy tea with the god residing in your chimney.
Your primary goal is to grow produce and restore the mandrake lodge. Rest assured, the developers confirm there’s no cannibalism involved.
A World Steeped in Lore
Mandrake isn’t just about tending to plants. It’s about immersing yourself in a world steeped in folklore and mystery. Failbetter Games excels at crafting compelling narratives and atmospheric settings, and Mandrake appears to be no exception.
The game promises “deep histories, and deeper mysteries” waiting to be uncovered as you explore the sleepy rural hollow of Chandley.
