In a surprising cross-genre collaboration, Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams and Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy teamed up for a unique performance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The duo delivered a spirited cover of “Ffunny Ffrends,” a track originally released in 2010 by Unknown Mortal Orchestra and serving as the opening track of the band’s 2011 self-titled debut album and opening track on the debut.
The performance stood out not only for the unexpected pairing of the indie-rock veteran and the pop-punk superstar but also for its instrumentation. Williams added a distinct sonic layer to the cover by utilizing a theremin, bringing an experimental edge to the Unknown Mortal Orchestra song during the live set.
Beyond the Music: Tweedy, Offerman, and the Art of Friendship
The musical collaboration was part of a larger appearance for Jeff Tweedy, who also participated in a pre-show interview with his close friend, actor Nick Offerman. The friendship between the two dates back to when Offerman cast Tweedy in a role as a “washed-up Midwestern rocker” on the television series Parks & Recreation as detailed during the broadcast.
During the segment, Stephen Colbert also inquired about the pair’s friendship with author George Saunders. When asked for an invite the next time the three friends gather, Tweedy laughed and noted, “That’s what we’re here to figure out” during the interview.
This appearance marked Tweedy’s second time interviewing on the program since October 2025, a previous visit where he promoted his solo project, Twilight Override as noted in recent reports.
Upcoming Tours and New Releases
Both artists are currently navigating active touring schedules. Hayley Williams has been performing across North America on a solo venture since March, specifically headlining “The Hayley Williams At A Bachelorette Party tour” according to tour setlists.
Jeff Tweedy is preparing for a significant summer trek. Starting April 23, Tweedy will lead Wilco on a tour across North America and Europe to support the release of a massive deluxe edition of the band’s 2004 album, A Ghost is Born.
Collaborative Future with This is Lorelei
While the Late Show performance was a standout moment, Williams and Tweedy’s professional relationship extends to other projects. Both musicians are featured on the forthcoming deluxe album from This is Lorelei, titled Box for Buddy, Box for Star as confirmed by recent news.
The collaboration highlights a continuing trend of genre-blurring partnerships between established alternative icons and contemporary pop figures, bridging the gap between Wilco’s experimental Americana and Williams’ versatile vocal range.
The next confirmed milestone for the group is the start of Wilco’s summer tour on April 23.
