Manchester United academy standout JJ Gabriel is poised for a senior pre-season debut on the upcoming European tour, while the club pursues a deal for Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount embraces a leadership role under Michael Carrick.
JJ Gabriel Eyes Senior Debut on European Tour
Fifteen-year-old Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel is expected to make his senior debut for the club during their pre-season preparations.
Because Gabriel was 14 at the start of last season, Premier League regulations prevented him from featuring for the first team or the under-21 squad. With those age restrictions now lifted, the young prospect is set to travel with the senior squad for their pre-season tour of mainland Europe, which includes a high-profile fixture against AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, scheduled for August 15.
“He is not allowed [to be part of a first-team squad on a matchday]. He’s too young. JJ’s doing really well. We’ve got some really good players in the academy and we try and get the younger players up [with the main group] as much as we can.”

The talent of a player just 15 years old is extraordinary. He’s been exceptional: 26 goals and three assists in 26 appearances for the under-18s. He’s consistently played two or three years above his age group coming through the Manchester United system. He’s been compared to Lamine Yamal, Neymar, and Cristiano Ronaldo, though neither he nor his family will want that sort of pressure put on his shoulders. He’s a wide player, though he can play left or central. He could develop into a number 10 as he grows physically, and his dribbling ability is exceptional. Low centre of gravity, eye for a pass, eye for a goal. He’s regarded as the generational talent coming through, a Max Dowman type of player. It’s excellent news for England. Perhaps in 2030 you could have Max Dowman and JJ Gabriel in the England side, which would be terrific.
He comes from a footballing background. His father, Joe O’Cearuill, was an ex-professional footballer, a youngster at Arsenal who spent a lot of time in non-league. He can play for several countries through his heritage: England, Ireland, Cyprus, and Trinidad and Tobago. England will surely be able to tie him down, and he’s already played for the under-17s. He’s an exceptional talent who will, I’m sure, make his senior competitive debut next season. Every time I’ve watched him, he’s that player you just keep finding. It’s almost like what Spain do with Lamine Yamal. You watch Spain or Barcelona and see how often they look for Yamal: get the ball, find him. He’s going to have bumps in the road. He’s 15, and it will be difficult. Lamine Yamal got criticised in the World Cup for not performing all the time, and Yamal was 19.
Director of football Jason Wilcox told the club’s website that the team’s fixtures across five countries and six cities will provide essential preparation for the 2026-27 campaign. Alongside these preparations, Manchester United has officially launched its new home kit featuring a classic polo collar and adidas details.
Mason Mount Discusses Captaincy and Midfield Partnership
During United’s recent pre-season friendly against Rosenborg, midfielder Mason Mount wore the captain’s armband after Harry Maguire was substituted in a 5-0 victory. Mount expressed enthusiasm for taking on additional responsibility to support the younger squad members.
“You have different types of leaders. You have ones that are very vocal, but I see myself as one who leads by example and never stops working. I’ve been captain previously, years ago, so I love the role.”

The match also offered supporters a first look at a new central midfield pairing featuring Mount alongside summer signing Andrey Santos. The Brazilian midfielder arrived at Old Trafford in a £50m switch from Chelsea.
“He’s a really good player and reads the game very well. He’s a little bit more defensive, so it allows me to push on a little bit more and work off him.”
