The purpose of Aldi’s strong expansion is to exploit the potential inherent in the changed shopping habits of American consumers. The higher prices – which on average exceed the pre-pandemic level by 19% – namely they encourage consumers to look for cheaper alternatives such as private label products or discount stores.

The prices of food consumed at home showed a significant increase: they rose by 11.4 percent in 2022, and by another 5 percent overseas in 2023. This increase was much higher than the average annual food price increase of 2.5 percent.

Aldi’s expansion plan is also influenced by the US Federal Trade Commission’s court challenge to the merger between Kroger and Albertsons. The planned merger of the two companies – which was agreed upon in October 2022 – would threaten market competition and lead to higher prices for many Americans.

Aldi’s plan includes not only the opening of new stores, but also the transformation of existing stores. The company aims to open nearly 330 new stores in the Northeast and Midwest regions by the end of 2028. Further expansion is expected in Southern California and Phoenix, as well as new markets such as Las Vegas.

In addition, Aldi recently completed its acquisition of Southeastern Grocers, which will allow it to rebrand more Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets in the coming years.
