Romilde van Dongen (41) is a reporter at RTL Boulevard and likes to write about love, dating and singles. She enjoys dating programs on television and makes no secret of her opinion. This season she is ready for an afterword about the yes words in ‘Married at First Sight’.

“Anneke and Dirk couldn’t keep their hands off each other on the wedding day and a day later she doesn’t want to know anything about him anymore. You’re not making that up, are you?”

Sometimes it feels like I’m watching a compelling Netflix series and I almost forget Married at First Sight is about the love lives of real people. It looks like a soap opera, doesn’t it? Anneke and Dirk couldn’t keep their hands off each other on the wedding day and a day later she doesn’t want to know anything about him anymore. You’re not making that up, are you? And I had only just recovered from all the drama between Malou and Sarath. And then Erik and Gerben, who already know each other from a dating app and meet again at the altar. It can all be done in a film script.

With all those tears and arguing, you would almost forget a couple like Jeffrey and Jerney. After a spectacular wedding party, the two enter the hotel room hand in hand. I think they’re cute together. Jeffrey already looks a bit more relaxed and is happy with his new wife: “I couldn’t have gotten a better match.” Jerney also cannot believe her luck: “I didn’t dare hope that it would click so well,” she admits. Wow, big pillows before bed. That is promising. At Schiphol they walk hand in hand again. This is a nice set, you know! The bathroom has a glass door, but Jeffrey doesn’t mind that with Jerney. On the balcony they kiss intensely again. Where is this going? Jeffrey and Jerney really seem like one match made in heaven. Go, into that jacuzzi. And the camera gone, if you ask me.

Bastiaan and Suzanne are about to say yes to each other. Bastiaan looks a bit uncomfortable. Nerves, I think. They give an economical kiss after saying yes. It takes some getting used to for this new couple. Whether he looks like Winston Gerschtanowitz or not: “Let’s join us for Christmas,” Suzanne’s mother shouts. What a nice mother-in-law you have, Bastiaan! He likes his wife: “Suzanne is definitely my type.” The ball is in Suzanne’s court. I don’t know, she’s hard to read. After the party, the wedding dress is stuffed into the car and the gas is turned on. This hotel room also has an open shower. What is it with those glass showers? “We have to come up with something about that,” says Suzanne. “Are you romantically inclined?” Bastiaan wants to know about her. “Not necessarily,” she says. I also don’t think Suzanne will necessarily fall for Bastiaan. No, I have yet to see between these two.

Erik and Gerben already had a date before the recordings started. They had to cut it off for the program. Of course they can’t believe their eyes in front of the altar. That one date is their match! Although you would think that they already know each other and are therefore more relaxed, the opposite is true. I think it seems a bit awkward and Erik in particular seems a bit uninterested. During the vows, Gerben and Erik couldn’t be further apart. Wow, what a distant affair. And oh, what an awkward kiss on the cheek! What was that? Let me rewind. I can already see it, Gerben pulls Erik towards him, he goes for the kiss, but it ends up on Erik’s cheek because he goes for the hug. I don’t know with these two. Erik thinks Gerben is a warm person and hopes ‘that he can be the one for me’. I think it remains a matter of hoping.

Anneke and Dirk seem to have taken over the drama baton from Malou and Sarath. Although the omens were good, less than 24 hours later it turned into the earliest marital crisis ever. “I feel a bit sorry for Dirk, but I don’t feel anything at all, zero point zero,” Anneke cries. Poor Dirk. He bursts into tears, but also remains stuck in the victim role. “I heard a lot of criticism, then I thought: I’m done with it. Then all kinds of crosses were made: he doesn’t have fantastic teeth, he doesn’t have fantastic clothes.” He further sums up: “I’m too old, I have bad teeth, I have this, I have that. Only my suit will do.”

These people bring out the worst in each other. Old pain points are hit and conclusions are drawn too early. Expert Eveline rushes in to save what can be saved. “Aren’t you looking for the perfect man?” Eveline wants to know. “I think I’m worth that, Eveline, otherwise I’d rather stay alone,” Anneke answers.

I don’t think this is going to work out yet. Separate rooms and some peace and quiet is the motto. Anneke leaves the bracelet Dirk gave her in his room. “It doesn’t suit me,” she thinks. That seems like the death knell to me, returning a gift you’ve received. Let’s face it, isn’t this just the script for an addictive drama series?

Married at First Sight you can see it every Tuesday and Wednesday at 8:30 PM on RTL 4 and on Videoland.
