The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) suspended Angola from international sporting competitions for an indefinite period. As a result, the Angolan Swimming team competed this Saturday, under the flag of the National Olympic Committee, at the Doha World Aquatic Sports Championship, which takes place between the 2nd and 18th of February in Qatar, and defines the places for the Olympic Games of Paris 2024.
Angola is prohibited from participating in activities linked to WADA, due to non-compliance with the Anti-Doping Law, which is pending approval by deputies of the National Assembly. However, the ban does not compromise FIBA and FIFA competitions.
As a result, Angola is prohibited from participating in activities linked to the World Anti-Doping Agency. The country also lost privileges such as ineligibility to host WADA events, ineligibility to hold positions at WADA and ineligibility to participate in WADA programs such as the Independent Observer Program or Awareness Program.
According to the document we have been quoting, “the Angolan flag should not be flown in regional, continental and world competitions… under the aegis of organizations affiliated to WADA”.
However, until the approval of the law, consequent promulgation and declaration of compliance by WADA, Angolan athletes will participate under the Olympic or Confederation Flag. In other words, officially, they will not be representing Angola.
It should be noted that the ban does not compromise FIBA and FIFA competitions.
